Networkmeeting in Hamburg (Germany) on 12 March 2014

The IAPM‘s Senior Official Udo Schmidt hosted the Metropolitan Region of Hamburg’s second IAPM Network Meeting of the year on 12 May 2014. It was attended by IAPM certificate holders and their guests. The event was open to everyone in northern Germany who is interested in project management and publicised by the regional organisations of the PMI, GPM and DGQ. It was held on the premises of the Hamburg Port Authority AöR in Hamburg’s “Speicherstadt“ district.

After the welcome address, the Network Meeting on the theme of “The Three Associations‘ PM as the Basis for MY PM“ kicked off with a brief introduction to individual project management and the support bases of the PMI, GPM and IAPM associations. In the main part, Astrid Berger, Head of the Project Management Office, and Martin Tenkleve, Head of the Development Project Unit, provided a joint presentation on the topic of “The Port of Hamburg Embarks on Project Management: from (ex)-authority to modern project enterprise.”

The more than 35 participants were particularly interested in the following aspects:

  • The special features of HPA’s public-sector projects at the Port of Hamburg
  • The HPA’s role as project implementer and construction manager
  • The HPA’s experiences during past and ongoing organisational changes in the process of establishing a project enterprise

There were many questions from the audience and the presenters provided some very honest answers. Many participants particularly appreciated the elements in which the HPA reported on the learning effects it has achieved. It was clear that the HPA has established project management structures that are tailored to its specific requirements and that these structures are in a continuous process of optimisation.

Dialogue continued during the networking part of the event, which was sponsored by HPA and included snacks. Participants also took advantage of the opportunity to chat to project managers who were members of different associations, and, naturally, to swap business cards. Everyone took the documents that were on display providing a detailed overview of upcoming project management events in northern Germany (organised by the PMI, GPM, DGQ and IAPM) in 2014.
